Greenshield
Fire & BloodGreenshield was one of the four Shield Islands visited by Jaehaerys Targaryen during his extended royal progress in 89 AC. The island’s recorded place in the history is a personal and dynastic moment: in Lord Chester’s hall, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen disclosed her intention to marry, and the king approved her choice.
Place in the Shield Islands
The Shield Islands formed a stop on Jaehaerys’s travels through the Reach. He had never visited them before, and made a point of landing on all four. Greenshield was therefore part of a deliberate royal visit to places beyond the familiar circuit of the great seats, during a year in which the king remained on the move.
The Royal Visit
At Highgarden, Rhaenys joined her grandfather for part of the journey, flying on Meleys, the Red Queen. They travelled together to the islands, and Greenshield’s Lord Chester received them in his hall. The visit placed the king and princess together in a local lord’s household rather than at court, where Rhaenys could speak to him directly about her future.
Rhaenys’s Marriage Plans
In Lord Chester’s hall, Rhaenys told Jaehaerys that she intended to marry. He gave his blessing and affirmed that she could not have chosen a better man. The account records no further details of the conversation, but the king’s approval made Greenshield the setting for a significant family and dynastic exchange during the royal progress. The journeys continued afterward, eventually bringing Jaehaerys to Oldtown.
